Some Good News on BPA in Water

From Environmental Health News:

As water treatment plants struggle to keep up with the chemical cocktail heading into our pipes, researchers say they’ve come up with a solution to remove one of the most ubiquitous contaminants—BPA.

Chemists were able to remove about 99 percent of bisphenol A (BPA) from water using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and engineered catalysts, according to a study released today in the journal Green Chemistry.

The findings are a potential game-changer. Water treatment plants were not designed to deal with chemicals such as BPA, which is used to produce polycarbonate, epoxy and phenolic resins and largely used to make plastic hard and shatterproof, but also used in thermal receipt paper and food packaging.

Comment: This is encouraging news. BPA is linked with a variety of serious health problems, including cancer, infertility, birth defects, and heart disease, and is used in making of many consumer goods. “BPA-free” products are often no better, as one endocrine-disrupting chemical is replaced with another. ANH petitioned the US government to remove BPA from cash register receipts, but so far we haven’t received any response at all.

Vaccines Don’t Make Us Sick?

From NPR:

For the first time, the number of children paralyzed by mutant strains of the polio vaccine are greater than the number of children paralyzed by polio itself.

So far in 2017, there have been only six cases of “wild” polio reported anywhere in the world. By “wild,” public health officials mean the disease caused by polio virus found naturally in the environment.

By contrast, there have been 21 cases of vaccine-derived polio this year. These cases look remarkably similar to regular polio. But laboratory tests show they’re caused by remnants of the oral polio vaccine that have gotten loose in the environment, mutated and regained their ability to paralyze unvaccinated children

“It’s actually an interesting conundrum. The very tool you are using for [polio]eradication is causing the problem,” says Raul Andino, a professor of microbiology at the University of California at San Francisco.

Comment: This illustrates why the conventional wisdom about vaccines today can be so off-base, especially with the HPV vaccine where it has caused manifest harm and is questionable efficacy compared to other prevention measures. Vaccines, like any other medicine, must be thoroughly examined for risks and benefits—not just blindly accepted.

New Worry for Your Tap Water

From The Guardian:

Microplastic contamination has been found in tap water in countries around the world, leading to calls from scientists for urgent research on the implications for health.

Scores of tap water samples from more than a dozen nations were analysed by scientists for an investigation by Orb Media, who shared the findings with the Guardian. Overall, 83% of the samples were contaminated with plastic fibres.

The US had the highest contamination rate, at 94%, with plastic fibres found in tap water sampled at sites including Congress buildings, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s headquarters, and Trump Tower in New York. Lebanon and India had the next highest rates.

Comment: Pile this onto the total toxic burden that we’re subjected to every day. These plastics can also absorb toxic chemicals, which then make their way into virtually everything we eat and drink. As the plastic fibers are so small, water filters do not catch all of them. (Recall our story on the FTC blocking development of a biodegradable plastic that, ironically, could help solve this problem.)

Action Alert! Tell the EPA to follow the law and clean up our drinking water. Please send your message immediately.

Surprise! Buried Deep in GOP Health Bill

The Obamacare repeal is only temporary—it expires in six years.

A few weeks ago, we told you about a new proposal described by nearly everyone as an attempt  to repeal and replace Obamacare. The bill has now been introduced by Sens. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Lindsay Graham (R-SC).

Overall, the initiative would eliminate federal subsidies for private insurance and the Medicaid expansion, transforming these funds into block grants to states to spend as they see fit, with some restrictions. States that have Obamacare can keep it if they want, although state governments would need to kick in some of their own money to continue. States that want a different system could make the necessary adjustments.

Some other brief points about the bill:

  • It repeals the individual and employer mandate;
  • It repeals some Obamacare taxes, principally the tax on medical equipment;
  • Like previous repeal/replace proposals, it lifts many restrictions on Health Savings Accounts (HSAs);
  • Obamacare requirements such as “essential health benefits” are NOT repealed, though states can apply for waivers from those regulations from 2020 through 2026, which means that a future administration could eliminate the waivers and bring back Obamacare rules for everyone;
  • The bill allows all individuals the option to purchase catastrophic health coverage, though these plans would be incorporated into the individual single risk pool, which we have warned against, because it will likely make the catastrophic only policies unaffordable.

Because the Graham-Cassidy legislation will have to move through the budget reconciliation process, Congress’ deadline to pass it is September 30. After that, it could be brought up down the road, but not soon.

Whether one supports or opposes Obamacare, it is not helpful to advertise a “repeal” bill that does not actually repeal it at all.

USDA: Fake Organics: Does The Agency Care?

We must pressure the federal government to police unscrupulous global players. Action Alert!

We’ve been telling you about the influx of fake organic grain imported from overseas. It’s especially infuriating that the USDA seems to recognize this problem but is doing very little about it. A 2016 USDA report highlights one such challenge:

As organic production and consumption in Turkey grow, so too do the concerns about fraudulent organic products and lack of inspections. According to a EUROPOL report, some Turkish companies have been involved in relabeling or repackaging products as organic and bringing the counterfeit products into the European Union, even though the products do not meet the organic standards.

One Turkish organic certifier, ETKO, seems to be egregiously at fault. Canada and the European Union have singled out ETKO  for its fraudulent certifications and “decertified” the firm —meaning that ETKO-certified organic products are no longer accepted as organic.

The USDA had problems with ETKO as far back as 2009 but, instead of decertifying this company, actually reached a settlement agreement with them in 2016. The firm is now under audit by USDA. We asked the status of the audit and were told that the agency is still gathering data and will be done “soon.”

As the saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” ETKO appears to have  been fooling people for years, based on Canadian and European action, and it’s time for the USDA to do its job and decertify this company. Not only do consumers unwittingly purchase products falsely labeled by the government as organic, but organic farmers in the US are also affected as they have to compete with fraudulent goods.

Action Alert! Write to Congress, with a copy to the USDA, urging lawmakers to step in to protect consumers and domestic farmers by investigating and if indicated decertifying ETKO. Please send your message immediately.

“Big Brother” USDA Wants to “Educate” You to Support Big Agriculture

That’s one takeaway from a report just issued about how to implement the sham GMO labeling law that Congress passed last year. Action Alert!

Recall that GMO labeling advocates were handed a defeat with the passage of the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard. It is a “labeling” law by only the slimmest definition: food companies must disclose GMO ingredients, but the consumer disclosure can take the form of a scannable QR or other electronic code on the food’s packaging.

The law stipulated that the USDA study the challenges of using such codes. What the study (conducted by giant government contractor Deloitte) found is of little surprise.

Significant deficiencies were identified in a GMO labeling system that relies heavily on QR codes to tell consumers about the contents of food. When consumers were observed trying to access the GMO disclosure, “researchers observed key technological challenges that prevented nearly all participants from obtaining the information through electronic or digital disclosure methods.” As we argued before the law passed, this was always just a ploy to enable Big Food to keep consumers from easily accessing the information they want about the food they buy.

The report provided to USDA also slights Americans’ understanding of GMOs. Quoting directly: “Though many consumers care about the issue of bioengineered food, there is limited understanding of the issue…This limited familiarity may result in soft opinions that are more likely to change over time and be sensitive to question wording. With implementation of the Law, consumer attitudes may shift as information about bioengineered food becomes more readily available.”

Translation: many Americans don’t buy the propaganda, repeated throughout the report, that “bioengineered foods are neither more nor less safe than non-bioengineered alternatives”—an assertion that is not borne out by the facts.

But don’t worry. The study recommends that a consumer education campaign be conducted to straighten us out about GMOs and QR codes. Somewhere, George Orwell is chuckling to himself.

Action Alert! Write to your elected officials and tell them that the new USDA report demonstrates that we need a GMO labeling bill that actually works. Please send your message immediately.

Compounding the Problem of Opioids

Big Pharma creates the problem, and now wants to sell us the vaccine “solution.”

With the opioid crisis getting even worse, researchers are scrambling to come up with a treatment for opioid addiction. That treatment could come in the form of a vaccine.

At a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society, researchers reported that they’re making significant headway in developing a vaccine against the effects of opioids. There has been initial success with this approach in animal studies, though it has not been tested in humans

Here’s the kicker. The challenge with a vaccine of this kind would be generating enough antibodies to counteract an entire dose of opioids. This means that an opioid vaccine would require multiple shots a year—music to the ears of pharmaceutical industry executives.

In summary,  Big Pharma, with the FDA’s approval, creates opioids that are up to 100 times as powerful as heroin. This  fuels an opioid epidemic  killing more people each year than traffic accidents—it is  now the largest single contributor to deaths among those under 50 years old.  A forthcoming vaccine could be sold at exorbitant rates without solving the underlying problem.

There are, of course, natural alternatives to pain management, such as fish oil and cannabidiol (CBD) oil, but the government is making moves to take affordable CBD oil off the market. It’s the same old, same old in our crony capitalist health system.

Ban Fish Oil Imports?

That is what a new Pharma firm lawsuit seeks to do. It also opens up a new front in the war on natural products by asking the US International Trade Commission to help create a new monopoly by knocking out imported EPA, the most anti-inflammatory kind of fish oil. Urgent Action Alert!

Amarin, the maker of an omega-3 drug, is taking the first steps to corner an important part of the fish oil market by asking the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to ban the importation of omega-3 dietary supplements that are composed mainly of the omega-3 known as  EPA (not to be confused with the federal agency). EPA is best known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Banning one of the most anti-inflammatory of foods, with inflammation linked to so many illnesses, with so many in pain, and with a pain prescription drug crisis going on, strikes us as almost unbelievable.  Will we let another important,  affordable, natural food or supplement be turned into a costly and difficult to obtain drug?  Note also that this opens a new front in the war on natural products by going to ITC rather than the FDA or FTC to try to create a new monopoly.

Here are some more resources on the importance of omega-3’s and the differences between them.

From Seeking Alpha

Amarin (NASDAQ:AMRNfiles a lawsuit with the U.S. International Trade Commission seeking a ban on the importation of omega-3 dietary supplements that are mainly comprised of the ester form of omega-3 called EPA. It wants the ITC to issue a general exclusion order prohibiting the importation of such products claiming the unregulated offerings represent “injurious unfair competition” to Vascepa [icosapent ethyl], approved by the FDA in July 2012 to reduce triglyceride levels in people with severely elevated levels of triglycerides. It also seeks a cease-and-desist order for all inventory of said products already in the U.S.
